Sunbows and rainbows over East Wall
ouble rainbow
We hope everybody has being enjoying the good weather lately. Here’s a collection of images of solar related phenomenon recently witnessed above the the area, captured by photographer and sky watcher Karl Larkin.
Above is a double rainbow, witnessed above Shelmelier Road.Below are a number of great pictures of a Sunbow, taken from Teeling Way and East Road. If you look closely you can see pigeons from a loft on Shelmelier road to the side of one of the sunbows.
Here is one of a Sunbow with Dublin Bay and Poolbeg included giving an idea of it’s scale.
According to Karl, Sunbow’s are caused by ice crystals high in the upper atmosphere refracting sunlight. This is similar to how a rainbow is created, but with ice instead of water. Some say there is a correlation between Sunbow’s and fine weather, but Karl believes that “Too many early in the year is not indicative of a good summer ahead”. Last year Karl witnessed approximately 30 occurrences of Sunbows in the city, and so far this year he has seen about 10. Karl is continuously photographing the skies above our community and we will be featuring more of his work on a regular basis.
Enjoy the sunny weather and keep watching the skies

Pride of Place plaques unveiled throughout the area
Claire Byrne the deputy Lord Mayor paid a visit to our community on Thursday 23rd May. This was to unveil the Pride of Place plaques commemorating the community winning the top spot in the national Pride of Place award 2012. Each venue which was visited by the judges in last year’s competition received a plaque, which can be seen around the community.
On the day the Deputy Lord Mayor unveiled plaques at the East Wall Water Sports, St.Joseph’s Co-ed School, Paddy’s the Butchers and the Sean O’ Casey Community Centre.
The staff and visitors at the Water Sports gave the Deputy Lord Mayor a tour of their facilities. It was a beautiful sunny day and a great day was had by all.
Particular praise must be given to the boys and girls, as well as th Principal and teachers of St. Joseph’s Co-Ed School. The welcome they gave to the Deputy Lord Mayor through songs, readings and the guard of honour by the sixth class should make their parent’s teachers and the community very proud.
The window display in Paddy’s shop showed the commemorative prize, Lord’s Mayors scroll, and certificates awarded to the community for their achievement.
Members of Daisy Days crèche gave great assistance to the Deputy Lord Mayor in unveiling the plaque in the community centre, which turned into several unveilings due to the high level of enthusiasm and long line of volunteers. This can be seen from the photographs below
Mary Downes and Josie Waller (who were amongst those who represented our community at the awards ceremony in Limerick) also welcomed the Deputy Lord Mayor when much needed tea and coffee was provided. A chit chat and photos with the Men’s club also helped to make the occasion very warm and welcoming.
The community should be very proud of their achievement – Pride of Place is a 32 county award. It was a great honour for our community to take part in and to win.
Hopefully we can build on our success and make our community the best it can be for everyone.

See this report from the East Cork Journal from the 16th of May on the fund raising efforts for this very deserving cause. The support from the East Wall girls is mentioned. Once again, congratulations to the girls for their hard work, and for highlighting our community in such a positive way.

The School Yard experience
There is an Open Evening in the school from 6.00 to 7.30 pm on Tuesday, 28th May 2013.The school yard has recently been transformed into what is now known as the ‘Yard Experience’. An invitation has been extended to adults to visit our school on the evening so that they can see for themselves the wonderful activities that are provided for the pupils in St. Joseph’s. The children will give demonstrations to adults on how to play games created by the pupils themselves.
All adults welcome to attend, and we look forward to seeing you there.
Save Our School
Unfortunately a serious matter has arisen relating to the School. Notification was recently received from the Department of Education and Skills regarding the loss of one permanent mainstream teaching post next September.
A local school has played a central role in this community for over a century. St. Josephs is making wonderful progress and is going from strength to strength. The impact of this decision and the proposed job loss will be very damaging and is unfair on the children, their parents and the staff. This must be challenged, and we would call on everybody to sign the petition, available throughout the community – at the school, in Paddy’s on Church Rd and the Sean O’Casey Community centre.

Rockin’ Road festival 2013
Sunday 26th May
This Sunday come along to a fundraiser with a difference – a Rock’n’Roll and vintage car festival on our doorstep!
A unique event in aid of Child Vision, there’s a great line up of bands (rockabilly, ska and classic punk), vintage vehicles of all descriptions and attractions for children.
This annual event is now in its fourth year, and if the good weather stays with us it’s a great place to be this weekend, and a very good cause.
So get your rockin’ shoes on, and make your way there …
