THE RISEN PEOPLE at THE SEAN O’CASEY THEATRE, EAST WALL.
East Wall P.E.G. are proud to present James Plunkett’s play "The Risen People" – which inspired his novel Strumpet City – a story that depicts the struggle of ordinary Dubliners during the 1913 Dublin Lockout. 2013 marks the 100th Anniversary of the 1913 Lockout, a time when Jim Larkin strove to protect the rights of the workers by organising them into a trade union. The refusal of the Employers’ Federation to recognise the union was the spark that ignited the conflict. August 31st is a particularly poignant date this year, as it is the 100th Anniversary of the attack by the Dublin Metropolitan Police on a rally of workers in Sackville Street (now O’Connell Street). Hundreds were injured, and two strikers were killed. East Wall P.E.G. are delighted to be performing "The Risen People" on this exact date, in remembrance of those who struggled for a better life for their families.
East Wall P.E.G is a small local Drama & Variety group based within the East Wall area and has been in existence for twenty years. We were founded by the Parent’s Education Group attached to the local primary school and we have produced many plays on many subjects over that period. We have done this to a consistently high standard while always following a policy of total inclusiveness in terms of gender, age, race and creed etc. Being based in the central Dublin / Docklands area, we have always enjoyed a special relationship with what might be described as Dublin “working class” plays, such as Maura Laverty’s “Tolka Row”, the works of Sean O’Casey and indeed our present production, James Plunkett’s “The Risen People”. We feel that they awaken in our members a passion that seems to transmit from the stage to our audience.
The play opens on Tuesday, August 20th at 8pm and continues until Saturday, August 31st (no performance on Sundays or Mondays). Tickets are priced at €10 each. Bookings: Email pegdrama@eircom.net Text/Call 0876499450 Or 018509000
